My Gerbil Escaped

If you have a gerbil long enough, eventually he/she is going to escape. An escaped gerbil can be very stressful for both you and your pet. The best way to find an escaped is to listen. You may hear the sound of foot step on the kitchen floor, or maybe the sound of cardboard being chewed in a closet. Remember gerbils like tunnels and small cubby holes. You will probably find them in a dark tucked away corner somewhere.

If you have a dog, he/she can also be very helpful at finding your gerbil. Dogs have very good sense of smell and can find your escaped gerbil a lot faster than you can, just be sure you watch very closely and don't let your dog hurt your gerbil.

Finding your gerbil is only the first step, catching them can prove to be equally as difficult. You can use a small cardboard box or tube. Place it in front of your gerbils hiding place and wait. Your gerbil will be tempted to explore this new small area. Once your gerbil goes inside, scoop it up.

If you have more than one gerbil, watch them closely when you first put the escaped gerbil back in the cage. Your escaped gerbil may carry strange scents that may cause fighting at first.
