Parrot Training

Parrots are among the smartest birds available as pets. However as with any pet, training takes time and devotion. When you begin training your new parrot, maintain a positive environment. Never punish your pet for incorrect responses, simply start again and be sure to reward proper responses, therefore reinforcing correct behavior. Once your bird understands he/she will be rewarded for certain behaviors and not for others, they will begin to modify their responses.

You should be aware that parrots are guided by natural instinct. They do not understand right from wrong. You are working to modify an animal that was born to follow their instincts. Training desired behaviors may not be an easy task, but remember, your success will feel very rewarding. Parrots require a lot of attention. If they do not receive the attention they demand, they may resort to improper behavior to get attention. You must remember to ignore inappropriated behavior so that they understand it will not get them the attention they desire.

Exotic Pets
Parrot training is not for people who lack patience. You need to be relaxed and focused on your pet's training. Make sure your pet is also relaxed and comfortable. Make sure his/her belly is full and they are properly hydrated so that these things do not distract your pet during training sessions. Also don't try to push your parrot too hard. Short training sessions will be more successful than long ones. Usual training sessions should not last more than a few minutes.

Training your bird should be fun and entertaining not only for you, but for your parrot as well. Pets learn by instinct or motivation, so learn by both. Parrots fall into this catagory of learning by both instinct and motivation. If your pet has a favorite treat or toy, try to work it into their training sessions. Be creative and entertaining in your training. Be sure to talk in a positive and uplifting tone. Your parrot will pick up on any negative tones and may ignore further training for that session.

Start your training with basic stuff like "up and down" and "catch" and don't get discurraged when your pet doesn't talk in complete sentences. Training takes time and patience. Just remember that your patience and time will be very rewarding in the long run. With proper training, you will create a lifetime bond with your parrot and training will get easier for both of you as time goes on.
