Setting Up A New Aquarium

If this is your first time to set up a new aquarium, remember this very important point. Never setup your tank and buy fish in the same day. Your new tank needs time to cycle. The cycle period allows the chemicals to balance and good bacteria to start growing. This can take from 7 to 14 days depending on the original condition of the water you use. Failing to allow this process to take place can kill your fish. Also remember not to add too many fish at the same time, this can also throw off the balance of your tank and cause illness or death.

When you go to the pet store to buy equipment, don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask others how they setup their tanks and what filter systems have worked for them. This will help prevent you from having to try different types of pumps and wasting a lot of money.

Once your tank is up and running, it is important to clean it at least once a month. Cleaning your tank means to remove 25% of the water, vacuuming the bottom of your tank, clean the tubing and filter, then add back fresh water and chemicals as needed. Never use any type of chemicals for cleaning your tank that are not designed specifically for aquarium use. When you add water back to your tank, use cold water, not hot. Cold water will warm up to the proper temperature faster than warm water will cool down.

As a general rule, you should keep your water temperature between 75 and 82 degrees farenheit. A thermometer and aquarium heater will help you monitor and maintain a healthy temperature.
